About Colonel Joseph C. Rodriguez

Joseph Charles Rodriguez was born on November 14, 1928, in San Bernardino, California. He grew up in a hardworking family with his parents, Jose and Victoria. Even though his family didn’t have much money, his father taught him an important lesson: be strong, be brave, and always do what’s right.

Joseph went to school in San Bernardino and later graduated from San Bernardino Valley College in 1950.

That same year, the Korean War began, and Joseph was drafted into the United States Army. He went to training in California and Colorado. He didn’t like the cold weather in Colorado, but he worked hard and became a soldier. Soon, he was sent to Korea.

In 1951, Joseph was part of a very difficult battle near a place called Munye-ri. His group of soldiers was trying to take control of a hill, but they were stopped by enemy fire. It was very dangerous, and many soldiers were stuck and couldn’t move forward.

Joseph knew he had to help. Even though it was risky, he bravely ran up the hill toward the enemy. He used his training and courage to stop the enemy and help his team move forward. Because of his actions, his group was able to take control of the hill.

For his bravery, Joseph Rodriguez was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest award a soldier can receive. He was given this award by President Harry S. Truman in 1952.

Joseph was hurt during the war but recovered and continued serving in the Army. He stayed in the military for many years, rising through the ranks and traveling to different parts of the world. He eventually became a colonel and retired after 30 years of service.

Joseph married Rose Aranda, and together they had three children. After retiring from the Army, he lived in Texas, where he worked, volunteered, and spoke to students about the importance of courage, hard work, and helping others.

Joseph C. Rodriguez passed away in 2005 at the age of 76. Today, he is remembered as a true hero. In September 2008 the Colonel Joseph C. Rodriguez Preparatory Academy, a combined elementary and middle public school in San Bernardino, was named in honor of the Medal of Honor recipient.
